International Palestinian Land Day falls commemorates the seizure of Palestinian land to create the state of Israel in 1947, 1948, 1967 and continuing through today. The awareness event was first instituted in 1976.
Palestinian Land Day calls for a return of Palestinian refugees to the land that was taken from them by force. Every year on this day a "Global March to Jerusalem" is organized, where non-violent activists arrive in Israel's neighboring Arab countries and march peacefully to Jerusalem.
In 2018, Palestinian Land Day kicked off a 6 week campaign of unarmed protests called The Great March of Return on the Gaza border to protest the 11 year siege, 50 years of occupation and the inability to return to their own lands, confiscated by the state of Israel in 1948 or 1967.
Over the course of the next six weeks, Israeli snipers with high powered long range rifles would kill over 120 civilians, including children, medics and journalists, while wounding another 13,000 from a position of safety on the Israeli side of the barrier. One Israeli soldier received a minor injury during this time. The Israeli government praised the bravery and moral righteousness of its snipers and proceeded to blame Hamas for the deaths. Hamas was not involved in the planning, nor the carrying out of the protest. It was a grassroots action organized by students and unemployed youth.
